The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued severe rainfall alerts, escalating warnings from orange to red across several Indian states, including Gujarat, Konkan, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, and parts of North-East India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported significant weather developments over the past 24 hours, ending 08:30 AM IST on June 16, 2025. Isolated pockets of East Uttar Pradesh experienced heatwave conditions even as several other regions battled intense rainfall and thunderstorms. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe, Madhya Maharashtra, and Coastal Karnataka recorded heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, while South Interior Karnataka, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Goa, Odisha, Gujarat Region, and parts of Uttar Pradesh witnessed very heavy downpours.
In addition, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra, North Interior Karnataka, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam & Meghalaya reported heavy rainfall activity, further intensifying concerns over localized flooding and waterlogging.
Cyclonic Circulations Trigger Active Monsoon Over Maharashtra and Neighboring States
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that cyclonic circulations at multiple atmospheric levels are now intensifying monsoon activity across several regions. A strong cyclonic circulation is present over South Central Maharashtra and its surrounding areas at approximately 7.6 km altitude. Simultaneously, another cyclonic system is active over the Bay of Bengal, extending from 3.1 km to 7.6 km above sea level. These systems are fueling the advancement of the monsoon into Vidarbha, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, with favorable atmospheric conditions accelerating its progress.
State government officials have indicated that with these developments, the monsoon phase has officially intensified, bringing much-needed rainfall but also raising alerts for heavy showers and potential disruptions.
Mumbai and Pune Witness Continuous Heavy Rains as Monsoon Gains Momentum
Mumbai and Pune have already begun to experience sustained rainfall since late last night. Pune, in particular, recorded significant precipitation, with the Varandha Ghat Shirgaon area registering 113 mm of rain. Light but steady showers continued in Mutha Ghat towards Lavasa, indicating widespread rain bands. The continuous downpour has led authorities to issue advisories urging caution, especially in low-lying and landslide-prone zones.
Mumbai’s Rains Disrupt Trains, Metro, and Flights; Commuters Face Delays
Mumbai’s relentless monsoon rains brought major transport services to a standstill on Monday, as both suburban train and metro lines faced multiple delays. Central and Western Railway commuters encountered significant disruptions, with local trains running behind schedule by nearly 20 to 30 minutes, causing heavy passenger congestion during peak office hours.
The metro network wasn’t spared either. A brief suspension hit the Ghatkopar-Andheri-Versova Metro Line after strong winds carried a plastic sheet onto the overhead wires near Azad Nagar station. Mumbai Metro One teams quickly addressed the issue, resuming normal service within a short span.
Flight operations at Mumbai Airport also felt the ripple effect. IndiGo Airlines issued a travel alert cautioning passengers about ongoing heavy rain, severe waterlogging, and low visibility affecting road travel to the airport, potentially leading to flight delays.
Thunderstorms and Squally Winds Lash Multiple Regions with High Wind Speeds
Thunderstorm activity was widespread, with strong squally and gusty winds clocking speeds between 60-105 kmph in Jharkhand, Madhya Maharashtra, Haryana, Bihar, Konkan, Jammu-Kashmir, and Chhattisgarh. Lower wind speeds of 30-59 kmph were reported across Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Saurashtra & Kutch. The IMD continues to closely monitor these rapidly changing weather patterns, urging residents to stay alert and follow safety guidelines.
