India-Canada relations: MEA Issues Strong Response to Canada's "Outrageous Accusations" Regarding Indian Diplomats' Involvement in Nijjar Case. The Indian government designated Hardeep Singh Nijjar as a Khalistani terrorist, citing his involvement in promoting separatism and violence. Following his death on June 18, 2023, India reaffirmed its stance, emphasizing that his activities posed a significant threat to national security
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused Indian diplomats of being “persons of interest” in the investigation into the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This accusation has escalated tensions, particularly as pro-Khalistani groups in Canada have openly threatened India’s High Commissioner, even firing bullets at his effigy and burning it.
As the situation unfolds in the India-Canada relations, it would be interesting to note the further developments of the present Canadian Government, particularly as it appears to be hanging by a thread due to its weakened position ahead of the upcoming elections. The outcome of these developments could have far-reaching implications for both nations as they navigate this complex diplomatic landscape.
In response, India has condemned Trudeau’s claims as baseless, emphasizing the absence of supporting evidence. This ongoing dispute underscores significant concerns about national security and sovereignty within the context of India-Canada relations. India has repeatedly highlighted that Canada has failed to provide substantial proof for its allegations, thereby questioning the credibility of Trudeau’s government.
India announced that its diplomats were being withdrawn due to security concerns. In a tit-for-tat move late on Monday, India expelled six Canadian diplomats, including Acting High Commissioner Stewart Wheeler, who had been summoned to South Block for an explanation earlier that day.
“We have received a diplomatic communication from Canada yesterday suggesting that the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats are ‘persons of interest’ in a matter related to an investigation in that country. The Government of India strongly rejects these preposterous imputations and ascribes them to the political agenda of the Trudeau Government that is centered around vote bank politics”, the Mea said, releasing an official statement.
The recent escalation in India-Canada relations follows closely after a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the East Asia Summit in Laos. Just days after their discussions, Trudeau accused Indian diplomats of being “persons of interest” in the investigation into the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Furthermore, India has criticized Canada for allowing extremist groups to operate freely, contributing to the harassment of its diplomats and community leaders. In light of these developments, India has expelled six Canadian diplomats and withdrawn its High Commissioner to Canada, reaffirming its commitment to protecting national interests.
“The Trudeau Government has consciously provided space to violent extremists and terrorists to harass, threaten and intimidate Indian diplomats and community leaders in Canada. This has included death threats to them and to Indian leaders. All these activities have been justified in the name of freedom of speech. Some individuals who have entered Canada illegally have been fast-tracked for citizenship. Multiple extradition requests from the Government of India in respect of terrorists and organized crime leaders living in Canada have been disregarded”, the MEA stated.
Moreover,India condemned Trudeau’s claims as baseless, citing a lack of supporting evidence. Since Trudeau made these allegations in September 2023, the Canadian government has not shared any evidence with India, despite repeated requests. This latest development follows interactions that have again featured assertions without facts, suggesting a deliberate strategy to smear India for political gains.
“Since Prime Minister Trudeau made certain allegations in September 2023, the Canadian Government has not shared a shred of evidence with the Government of India, despite many requests from our side. This latest step follows interactions that have again witnessed assertions without any facts. This leaves little doubt that on the pretext of an investigation, there is a deliberate strategy of smearing India for political gains,” the statement quoted.
The Indian government has issued a robust statement regarding the activities of the Canadian High Commission in India, asserting that these actions align with the political agenda of the current Canadian administration. The statement emphasizes that India has taken note of these developments and has implemented the principle of reciprocity in diplomatic representation.
India reserves the right to take further steps in response to what it views as unfounded allegations against its diplomats. This strong stance underscores India’s commitment to protecting its diplomatic integrity and addressing perceived affronts. As tensions continue to rise, it is imperative for both nations to engage in constructive dialogue to address the underlying issues and seek a resolution.
The rising tensions between India and Canada relations, reveal significant underlying issues that both governments need to navigate carefully. Trudeau’s accusations appear politically motivated, especially with his administration facing challenges ahead of the elections. Such actions risk worsening diplomatic relations instead of encouraging meaningful dialogue.
The threats posed by pro-Khalistani groups are alarming and underscore the necessity for Canada to adopt a stronger stance against extremism. Both countries would gain from focusing on diplomatic engagement rather than heated rhetoric, as a cooperative approach is vital for resolving conflicts and ensuring the safety of diplomats and citizens. Ultimately, establishing common ground will be essential for stabilizing their relationship in the future.
