In the first phase of the Jharkhand Election 2024, 638 candidates, including 73 women, are contesting for 43 assembly seats. In the previous election, Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) secured 30 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 25, and Congress took 16. This led to the formation of a coalition government between JMM, Congress, and RJD, with Hemant Soren serving as Chief Minister.
As voters head to the polls, Utkarsh Kumar, Returning Officer for Ranchi Assembly constituency, confirmed that all necessary facilities, such as drinking water, toilets, and web-casting services, are available at polling stations. Tight security measures, including the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), have been put in place, ensuring that all Election Commission protocols are strictly adhered to.
As the JMM-led coalition fights to retain power, it’s facing fierce competition from the BJP-led NDA, with both sides intensifying their campaigns. The JMM is banking on its welfare initiatives, like the Maiyan Samman Yojana, while the BJP has amped up its Hindutva agenda, highlighting concerns over infiltration and alleged corruption under the current government.
In the spotlight, former CM Champai Soren, now contesting on a BJP ticket from Seraikela, faces off against former JMM leader Ganesh Mahli. In Jagannathpur, Geeta Kora (BJP), wife of ex-CM Madhu Koda, will take on Congress’ Sona Ram Sinku. Meanwhile, in Lohardaga, Congress veteran Rameshwar Oraon is set to challenge AJSU’s Shanti Bhagat in a high-stakes race.
The Jharkhand Election 2024 has seen a fierce political battle, with top leaders from both the BJP and INDIA bloc taking the stage. BJP leaders, including PM Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Yogi Adityanath, have held major rallies, rallying support for their alliance. Meanwhile, INDIA bloc leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and CM Hemant Soren have promised welfare schemes and criticized the BJP-led government for using central agencies like ED, CBI, and I-T to target opponents. The high-stakes campaign continues to heat up as both sides vie for voter support.
In response to the BJP’s “Gogo Didi” scheme, which promises Rs 2,100 per month to women, the JMM has introduced a more generous offer of Rs 2,500 per month. The JMM’s plan also includes 33% reservation for women in government jobs, a domicile policy based on 1932 land records, and the introduction of the Sarna Dharma Code. Additionally, the JMM promises to increase reservations for OBCs, SCs, and STs to 27%, 12%, and 28%, respectively.
These promises come as part of the JMM’s broader strategy to retain power in the face of a tough challenge from the BJP-led NDA.
Ahead of the first phase of voting in Jharkhand, the BJP has made bold promises, including a crackdown on infiltrators, the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Rs 2,100 per month for women, and the creation of 5 lakh job opportunities for the youth.
In response, the JMM has countered the BJP’s financial assistance plan with its own offer of Rs 2,500 per month for women, along with a 33% reservation for women in government jobs. The party has also promised to implement a domicile policy based on 1932 land records, introduce the Sarna Dharma Code, and raise reservation quotas for OBCs, SCs, and STs to 27%, 12%, and 28%, respectively.
Chief Electoral Officer K. Ravi Kumar confirmed that all polling arrangements are in place, with personnel already stationed at polling booths, ensuring a smooth election process.
