The Fortified Rice Supply Initiative is a government program aimed at distributing fortified rice to improve nutritional health and combat deficiencies in India.The Initiative represents a significant commitment by the Indian government to tackle anemia and micronutrient deficiencies among its citizens. With a robust financial allocation of ₹17,082 crores from July 2024 to December 2028, this initiative aims to benefit approximately 80 crore individuals across the country.

Developing the Supply Chain for Fortified Rice

  • Manufacturers: There are 925 fortified rice manufacturers with a combined capacity of 111 lakh metric tons (LMT) per annum.
  • Rice Mills: A total of 21,000 rice mills have installed blenders, contributing a monthly capacity of 223 LMT of fortified rice.
  • Premix Manufacturers: The initiative includes 232 premix manufacturers with a capacity of 75 LMT per annum.
  • Testing Facilities: There are 52 NABL-accredited labs dedicated to testing fortified rice, alongside 27 NABL labs for fortified rice kernel (FRK) testing and 11 NABL labs for vitamin and mineral premix testing.
  • Investment: A substantial investment of ₹11,000 crores has been allocated for developing this supply chain, ensuring the effective production and quality control of fortified rice across the country.

Historical figures such as Kanhoji Angre, a commander in Chhatrapati Shivaji’s navy, highlight the significance of naval power in Indian history.Lothal, one of the key cities of the Harappan civilization around 2400 BC, was famous for its advanced shipbuilding techniques and vibrant trade. The NMHC is expected to enhance maritime heritage awareness and promote tourism, further contributing to the economic and cultural landscape of the region.The Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat, to be developed in two phases.

  • Phase One: Estimated at ₹1,238.5 crore, this phase will be funded through contributions from major boards, the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Navy, and the Ministry of Culture.
  • Phase 1B: This phase includes the construction of a lighthouse museum, with an estimated cost of ₹266.11 crore, funded by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Light Ships.
  • Job Creation: The project is anticipated to generate approximately 15,000 direct jobs and 7,000 indirect jobs.
  • Community Benefits: Local communities, tourists, researchers, government bodies, educational institutions, cultural organizations, environmental groups, and businesses will benefit from the initiative.
