The relentless monsoon rains have wreaked havoc across Northeast India, claiming at least 28 lives in a series of devastating floods and landslides. Tragedy struck Guwahati with a deadly mudslide that took five lives, including three members of the same family. Arunachal Pradesh and several other states like Mizoram, Tripura, and Meghalaya are grappling with rising water levels and deadly landslides, leaving communities struggling to cope with the widespread destruction. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as relief efforts intensify to aid the thousands affected by this severe weather crisis.

Northeast India Weather Update: Severe Flooding and Landslides Disrupt Daily Life

Over the last 24 hours, Mizoram, Tripura, and Meghalaya have collectively reported eight fatalities linked to flash floods and landslides caused by continuous heavy rainfall. The relentless downpour has severely impacted infrastructure and safety in these states, prompting emergency responses from local authorities.

In Manipur, persistent rains over the past three days have brought the capital city, Imphal, to a near standstill. Significant waterlogging has affected multiple neighborhoods, forcing officials to issue flood warnings and recommend evacuations for residents living near the flood-prone banks of the Imphal River.

Adding to the concern, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continued heavy rains for the region, issuing red and orange alerts for parts of Assam, along with warnings for other northeastern states. Assam has been particularly hard hit, with flooding and landslides affecting 17 districts and impacting more than 78,000 people. Lakhimpur district remains the worst affected, with over 41,600 residents facing the consequences of rising waters and disrupted lives.

Relief efforts are underway as displaced populations seek shelter in multiple camps, while officials continue to monitor weather developments closely to mitigate further damage.

Assam Floods: Rescue Operations Intensify as Heavy Rains Disrupt Transport

Authorities including NDRF, SDRF, and emergency teams are actively conducting rescue and evacuation efforts in Assam amid severe flooding caused by continuous heavy rains. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the situation as “abnormal” due to persistent downpours.

Train services are disrupted, with the Dullabcherra-Silchar passenger train canceled and the Dullabcherra-Guwahati Express now starting from Baraigram. Floodwaters have overtopped National Highway-17 near Kamrup’s Chaygaon area, worsened by runoff from Meghalaya. Officials are managing traffic through alternate routes as relief work continues and heavy rain alerts remain in effect.

Emergency Response Intensifies as IMD Forecasts Heavy Rainfall in Khasi Hills

Authorities continue to closely monitor the heavy rain situation in the East and South West Khasi Hills, where extremely heavy downpours are expected over the next 24 hours. Emergency services remain active, preparing for potential escalations in flooding and related hazards.

The government is also considering deploying paramilitary forces to aid in the ongoing search for a missing couple from Madhya Pradesh, whose rescue efforts have been hampered by poor visibility and persistent rain since Friday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning from June 1 through June 6, highlighting the urgency for heightened vigilance and disaster preparedness in the region.
